Requirements for the Vanagon.

The Vanagon installation can be a challenge for two resons :

1. The nose of the transmission is close to the transverse chassis beam on the Vanagon, illustrated with a standard Vanagon mount and Subarugears Kombi transmission mount.

2. The original Vanagon transmission is a side-shifter instead of a nose-shifter. Using the standard shifter without modification results in a left-to-right reversed H pattern

instead of the correct H pattern of

What you need

From Subarugears

1. Rear drive conversion kit (choose Subaflanges Kombi 100mm standard)

OR

1. Fully built reversed 2WD transmission (choose Subaflanges Kombi 100mm standard)

FINAL DRIVE RATIO RECOMMENDATION for NON TURBO MOTORS - 4.44:1 for EJ20, EJ22, 4.11:1 for EJ25

FINAL DRIVE RATIO RECOMMENDATIO for TURBO & 6 CYL MOTORS - 3.9:1 or 4.11:1

Please check our handy calculator on the FAQ page to plot speed vs rpm for your combination before ordering.

2. Subamount Kombi transmission mount

From other suppliers

3. Our partners at 5SPEEDBUS in the USA have developed a complete installation kit for the Vanagon.

This kit places the transmission in the correct place for the Vanagon, and corrects the H pattern on the shifter, providing a slick shift and optimised installation with correctly configured slave cylinder to suit the Subaru clutch and VW master cylinder.

Please contact David Clymer to discuss an installation kit for your Vanagon. Send David an Email

4. 2 x Automatic length Vanagon (left hand side when in car) short axles. The correct length is 531.0mm or 20.5 inches

These are available new from EMPI (part number 90-6804) if you are unable to source VWAG ones.

5. Vanagon Subaru engine cradle to mount the engine.

6. Subaru BRZ hydraulic slave cylinder. The VW master cylinder to Subaru Liberty/Legacy/Impreza/WRX/Outback/Forester slave cylinder bore sizes are a mis-match and result in a heavy (but useable) clutch pedal. Changing to the BRZ slave cylinder at 21mm bore size (instead of 19mm bore size) provides a much better matched setup, with comfortable clutch feel and travel. NABCO part number 114130151

Installation into car

The key to installing the Subaru 5 speed trans into a Vanagon is to drill a hole in the front and back of the transverse chassis beam to let the nose-shifter mechanism pass through it without reducing the strength of the beam. VW already has several holes for lines and rods to pass through. The Subaru shift rod and shift rod housing have to be shortened sufficiently to allow the transmission to be installed and removed without the engine needing to be removed. A removable universal joint allows connection of the shift rod through the transverse chassis beam :

The shift pattern is corrected by introducing a ball and socket into the shift mechanism (like the T1 beetle and T2 Kombi has) at the bottom of the gearstick, along with a bush to hold the shift rod in place and allow it to swivel.

These items, along with the shifter box and mounts have been optimised in the 5SpeedBus kit.

Clutch setup

The Subaru transmissions have a slave cylinder bolted to the top of the transmission. There are two types of transmissions with their matching flywheels, clutches and master/slave cylinders : push type and pull type.
